OUAN503 - Collaborative, Final Crit

We handed in our D&AD response to the Shutterstock brief on the day of the deadline. On the following day we had the final crit where we were meant to show all of the work we had produced for our individual briefs and also our collaborative brief too. Preparing for the final crit was quite a big task in regards to the collaborative brief, and everyone did a great job to produce boards and a final 'showreel' that showed all of the animations we had made for the brief in one video. Below are the boards that Tilly and Chay made by collecting all the different images that everyone had worked on and creating three separate boards for them, one for our initial designs and storyboards, one for our unrefined designs and finally the finished scenes and characters. I personally liked this format because it showed our whole process from planning to the final finished elements.

Below is the feedback sheet we used for the crit and some of the comments that were collected as a result of it. The feedback is generally quite positive which was nice to see. There were comments aimed at our boards and how they were presented, our professionalism and finally, the analysis of the brief, design work, and sketches or mockups. As well as this people could write what could be improved, which isn't that productive at this stage as everything was handed in a day before the final crit but it would be useful to remember and apply to future projects nonetheless. One of the comments suggested that could of included some more information about what was going on and what the intention was with our work, which I think is fair. I imagine it would have been difficult to decipher exactly what was going on within the boards and the animation itself with just a small line of text describing the brief. Aside from this the comments were all complimentary, saying how well put together the boards are and how organised it is. One comment also mentioned that it was great to see all of the work in one place. So nice work by Tilly and Chay to get such good feedback on the boards they made.

For the crit Ian also created a nice showreel with all of the animations we had produced coupled with an ident featuring a logo he made using all of our initials. This was a great idea and it was presented really well. It meant we could just loop it and let people watch it as they were going around the room viewing the work. So that the animations weren't viewed purely from a visual standpoint we put some headphones with the laptop they were being shown on so that people could put them on and listen whilst they watched, but at the same time the sound from the laptop wasn't looping and getting irritating to people nearby.

Overall I really enjoyed the crit and seeing everyone else's work was a really enjoyable process. Luckily the feedback wasn't too harsh because we wouldn't have been able to change anything at this point and it was mostly complimentary of our work and how we worked together. Finally, I think as a group we presented our work quite well, both on the boards and on screen so that people could watch them through and give us their feedback and opinions.
